Johannesburg – 24 April - International Panel on Inequality
Matthew Martin participated in a meeting of the International Panel on Inequality (IPI), organised by University of Witwatersrand, as a member of the IPI Advisory Group. The meeting aim was to help define the potential contents of the first IPI report, which is due in 2027. For more details of the meeting, click here.
The group in which DFI participated discussed the potential content of a chapter on “policies to reduce inequality”, suggesting the key areas to be examined should be: fiscal policies (spending on pro-poor public services, and progressive taxation); policies to end austerity, reduce debt service burdens and end the volatility of speculative global capital flows; policies to increase labour rights and wages, and end labour market discrimination; and policies to end excessive market concentration for key global goods such as food, medicine, digital and green technology and intellectual property. The next stage of the project will be the writing of the report.
